What is Light Spectrum in Indoor Landscaping?

Understanding Light Spectrum (Simple Way)

I was invited by a landscaping company to train their team on plant lighting.

The session was going well. I was explaining technical terms — light quality, quantity, CRI, CCT, DLI, PPE. Everyone was listening.

Then one senior design team member asked:

"Can you explain in simple words — what is light spectrum?"

For a moment, I paused.

I had already shown charts and graphs.

But then I realized something important —
what is simple for us may be new for them.

So I changed my approach.

The Simplest Way to Understand Spectrum 🌈

I showed them a rainbow and asked:

"What is this?"

They said, "A combination of different colors."

Exactly.

Those colors — red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet —
are different wavelengths of light.

👉 When all these wavelengths come together,
we call it a light spectrum.

How Light Spectrum Matters for Plants 🌱

Sunlight contains many types of radiation.

But what we see is visible light (400–700 nm), which is closely linked to Photosynthesis.

Plants actually use a slightly wider range — around 350–750 nm.

This is where lighting design becomes important in indoor landscaping.

What This Means for Indoor Landscaping 💡

In indoor spaces:

  • Plants do not get full sunlight

  • Artificial lighting must support plant growth

With LED grow lights:

  • We can select specific wavelengths

  • We can design spectrum based on plant needs

  • We can balance plant health with visual aesthetics

👉 This is where modern lighting supports Controlled Environment Agriculture concepts even in indoor landscaping.

Key Takeaway 🎯

Sometimes, the best explanation is not technical — it is simple.

A rainbow explains spectrum better than any graph.

And once this is clear, designing lighting for plants becomes much easier.

Final Thought 🌿

If you are working in indoor landscaping, understanding light spectrum is not optional — it is essential.

It helps you:

  • Choose the right lighting

  • Improve plant health

  • Deliver better results to clients
