How to Convert Lux to PPFD for Indoor Plants?
When we explain to clients that Lux measures light as perceived by the human eye, while PPFD measures the number of photosynthetically active photons reaching a surface per second, the next question is almost always:
"Then how do we convert Lux to PPFD or PPFD to Lux?"
The answer is yes, conversion is possible. But there is one important thing to understand.
The conversion factor is not the same for all light sources.
The factor varies between sunlight, LEDs, CFLs and metal halide lights. Even two LED lights can have different conversion factors because their spectra are different.
Using the wrong factor can lead to inaccurate PPFD estimates and potentially affect your lighting decisions.
A few years ago, our team developed a free online Lux-to-PPFD and PPFD-to-Lux calculator.
We used a spectrometer to measure different light sources and establish appropriate conversion factors for the calculator.
Today, the tool continues to help people working with plant lighting, indoor gardening and horticulture research.
Our calculator is free to use, and it receives thousands of impressions every month.
