Optimizing Grow Lights for High-Quality Leafy Vegetables

nexsel banner 1

Growing leafy vegetables indoors is not rocket science.
However, making it profitable and sustainable is the real challenge.

Over the last 10 years, we have seen many indoor farms shut down. At the same time, new agripreneurs continue to enter this space, aiming to build a viable and future-ready food system. While indoor farming may not be essential today, it will play a critical role in future food security 🌍.

With over a decade of industry experience, we have consistently worked to make grow lights more economical, energy-efficient, and easy to install, because lighting is a key success factor in indoor farming.

Let us understand how to use lighting effectively for leafy vegetables and what to consider while selecting grow lights.

Key Lighting Parameters for Leafy Greens 🌱

Grow lighting depends on four important parameters:

  1. Light Quality (Spectrum)

  2. Light Quantity (Intensity)

  3. Light Duration (Photoperiod)

  4. Light Uniformity

1 .Light Spectrum (Light Quality) :

Different suppliers offer different light recipes. Plants can grow even under white light, but the right spectrum combination ensures better growth, color, and yield.

• Blue Light (450–460 nm)

Ideal: 20–25% of total spectrum

          •  Too much (>40%): Slow growth

          •  Too little (<10%): Leggy plants

• UV Light (395–405 nm)

Ideal: 0–5%

Helps improve leaf coloration when combined with blue light 🌿

• Red Light (650–670 nm)

Ideal: 50–70%

Drives photosynthesis and supports leaf expansion 🌞

• Green Light (500–600 nm)

Ideal: 10–15%

Improves light penetration within the plant canopy

• Far-Red Light (720–750 nm)

Ideal: 5–10%

Supports balanced growth in leafy vegetables

2. Light Intensity (PPFD)

Light intensity directly impacts plant biomass.

• Nursery Stage: 120–180 PPFD

• Vegetative Stage: 200–250 PPFD

Can go up to 300 PPFD, but avoid exceeding this for leafy crops

3.    Light Duration (Photoperiod)

16–18 hours of light

6–8 hours of complete darkness

Dark periods are essential for healthy plant metabolism and optimal performance.

4. ight Uniformity

Uniform light distribution ensures even plant growth.
This depends on proper light placement and layout design.

Additional Design Tip

Maintain a minimum 15 cm gap between the light and plant canopy at full growth.

Design racks and structures accordingly for best results.

Beyond Lighting: Other Critical Growth Factors

From our experience, lighting alone is not enough. Successful indoor farming requires balanced control of other parameters:

  1. Temperature Control

  2. Humidity Management

  3. Nutrient Management

  4. Right Variety Selection

👉 Conclusion:
Optimized lighting, combined with proper environmental and crop management, is the foundation for premium-quality leafy greens and profitable indoor farms
